arlen got frank perdue off scott free after he killed a local man on October 30, 1974. Perdue's car collided with two cars on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, killing one of the drivers. Investigators say that Perdue was speeding. apparently, he ignored or overlooked warning signs and red lights as he entered a lane reserved for oncoming, detoured traffic. Perdue was charged with involuntary manslaughter, arrested and released on $500 bail, but the case was dismissed on May 12, 1975 "because it was not tried within the 180 days as required by Pennsylvania law," federal investigators reported. it has been reported since the highway death, the late chicken magnate was convicted of speeding 16 times in Maryland alone.

"Senator Specter. I had a big case involving--with Frank
Perdue, the chicken man, who drove onto the Pennsylvania
Turnpike one night when it was under construction, and didn't
know that it was one-way, and pulled out to pass and had a
head-on collision with an oncoming car, and killed the other
driver. And Frank Perdue came to me--I had finished my tour as
district attorney and was a defense lawyer at that time--and
rather than take the 20 minutes to tell you how I got him off..."
